Issues related to the overall upgrade of the Greek railway as well as transportation safety issues were the subject of a broad meeting held today under the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Staikouras, with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for Transport, Christina Alexopoulouthe general secretary of Transport, Yiannis Xifaras, the managing director of OSE, Panagiotis Terezakis, the president of the Railway Regulatory Authority (RAS), Ioanna Tsiaparikou and Roberto Rinaudo, Country Manager, and Georgios Anagnostopoulos, director of operations Hellenic Train.

The political leadership asked the two companies, OSE and Hellenic Train, to commit to their continuous and close cooperation in all issues related to railway safety and regarding the obligation to strictly observe the of the General Traffic Regulationthroughout the Greek railway network.

Her positioning also moved in the same direction RAS.

This implies, on the part of Hellenic Train, the acceleration of the investigation of the incidents related to the non-application of the Regulation. In addition, the willingness to cooperate, together with the OSE, to further improve the efficiency of human resources in matters related to security.

In particular, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, actions are being launched regarding the strengthening of security personnel, the re-evaluation of relevant internal regulations, retraining of personnel, as well as the establishment – by the OSE – of a special team to monitor radio communications between the traffic personnel and the train drivers.

At the same time, the need for effective supervision of the implementation of the measures that have already been taken and are planned to be taken by RAS was highlighted.

It is noted that in the event that persons are also found responsible from the investigation, then the prescribed sanctions will be applied accordingly. Something that has been requested by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, in writing with his letter, to the agencies involved.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is implementing a comprehensive plan for the restructuring and overall upgrading of the Greek railway, in the context of which, the evaluation of the degree of implementation of the above actions, as well as other related issues, will be the subject of similar meetings at regular intervals.

The meeting was held within the framework of the initiatives undertaken, from the summer of 2023, by the political leadership of Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportto enhance transportation safety.
