The two men who were trapped in the garage of the burning ship “Euroferry Olympia” were rescued by the Fire Brigade and had contacted the authorities this morning to ask for help.
According to information, the two men are currently on deck and one of them is experiencing respiratory problems. Soon, a Navy helicopter is expected to arrive to pick them up and take them to the Corfu hospital.
At the same time, they continue the investigations of the 1st EMAK of Athens, which rushed to Corfu to search for and rescue the missing, including 3 Greek nationals.
The other missing, according to ERT, are Bulgarians, a Turk and a Lithuanian.
For the rescue of the two people, the Coast Guard issued the following announcement at 19.00:
The two trapped foreign passengers of the “EUROFERRY OLYMPIA” of the Italian flag were located by a ladder of the EMAK.
Specifically, the said ladder of E.M.A.K. who boarded the above ship by helicopter of the Hellenic Coast Guard, located the two (02) foreigners. An Air Force Super Puma helicopter immediately rushed to the point of receipt of the above, which are to be transported to Corfu airport, from where they will be served at the Corfu General Hospital for medical treatment.
According to the latest information from the Coast Guard, the occupants of the ship have been fully counted and identified by officials of the Coast Guard – Hellenic Coast Guard, where it was found that 278 people have been rescuedincluding a person who was not on the official passenger list.
Also, the operation to release two foreign passengers who are inside the ship continues, while the operation to locate eleven missing passengers is underway, which according to the data so far, includes three Greek nationals. It is noted that, according to information, among the missing is another Greek woman, but who has a passport of another country.
According to the latest data from the port ship Euroferry Olympia that had started from Igoumenitsa bound for Brindisi in Italy, 278 passengers managed to get into the lifeboats of the ship and arrive in Corfu early in the morning.
Ten injurednine men and a woman, from the 278 rescued of the burning ship “Euroferry Olympia” were transported by EKAB to the Emergency Department of the General Hospital of Corfu in order to provide them with immediate first aid.
According to the medical announcement, 6 of them had slight respiratory difficulties due to monoxide inhalation, however their general condition was good and they remain hospitalized in the Pulmonary and Pathological Clinic of the Hospital for preventive reasons and administration of oxygen therapy.
Similarly, a patient with a meniscus injury remains prophylactically admitted to the pulmonology clinic due to respiratory distress.
In addition, one patient with hypertension, one with malaise and one patient with knee injury were discharged after completing the examination and giving instructions.
