With the food industry estimated to be responsible for one-third of harmful gaseous pollutants in the atmosphere, it is crucial that the foods that weigh the least on the planet are becoming increasingly popular. After all, by 2050 the earth’s population will reach 10 billion, while the resources that the planet has to offer are limited.
The Future 50 Foods exhibition by Knorr and WWF promotes foods that meet the following criteria: high nutritional value, low environmental impact, good taste, easy accessibility, popular and cheap. Here are some of the foods that meet all the requirements and in particular do not harm the environment:
1. Algae
Algae are high in fatty acids and antioxidants, and they also have a negative carbon footprint, as they produce oxygen as they grow older.
2. Lentils
Their environmental footprint is 43 times lower than that of beef, which produces by far the most pollutants compared to other foods. At the same time, lentils need only a little water to grow and have a high percentage of iron, folic acid and protein.
3. Murder
It is a type of millet originating from Africa, something between quinoa and couscous. This cereal is said to be “the cultivation of the lazy farmer”, as it is very easy to cultivate. It takes just 60 to 70 days to mature in sandy or acidic soil.
4. Okra
It is one of the most resistant vegetables to heat and drought. Okra is also rich in beta-carotene, zeaxanthin and lutein, valuable vitamins for skin and eye health.
5. Moringa
It is a “miracle” tree, which grows quickly and is extremely resistant to drought. It has even become a very popular superfood, as it can be ground into powder and added to smoothies. It is rich in vitamins A, B and C, iron and amino acids.
6. Spinach
Packed with vitamin A, iron and phytonutrients, spinach has the potential to grow very quickly at low temperatures.
7. Mushrooms
Mushrooms grow in the most unlikely places, where other plants are extremely difficult to bloom. It is also rich in protein and fiber. Finally, due to their taste, they can replace meat in our eating habits.
