This year, the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Ieronymos, did not officiate, but he read “I believe” instead of the President of the Republic
Without representatives of the political leadership of the place – including the President of the Republic – and the presence of the media, the Divine Liturgy was held today, Sunday of Orthodoxy, March 24, 2024, in the Catholic Church of the Holy Monastery of the Incarnate Petrakis, instead of the Metropolitan Church of Athens.
The Church of Greece “broke” a decades-old tradition, a move that was interpreted as a reaction of the Church to the approval of the bill for the marriage of same-sex couples. However, the “present” at the Divine Liturgy was given by Mr. Georgios Kalantzis, General Secretary of Religious Affairs.
Two days ago, Holy Synod of the Church of Greece had informed in her statement that after a decision of the Permanent Holy Synod that the celebration would take place in the Catholic Church of the Holy Monastery of the Incorporeal Petrakis.
After the end of the Divine Liturgy, a procession of the Holy Icons followed in the courtyard of I.M. Petrakis.
Also, the celebratory message of the day was delivered by the Metropolitan of Aetolia and Acarnania, Mr. Damaskinos, while “I believe” was read by Archbishop Hieronymos.
Before the Dismissal of the Divine Liturgy, the “Synodical Volume of Orthodoxy” was read in commemoration of the event of the Restoration of the Holy Icons.
