Another wild animal rescue incident was faced by the rescuers of the Wildlife Rescue Scout Group (PODAZ) of the 5th Marine Scout System of Mithymna Lesvos.

Trying to save a particularly beloved stork – a trademark in the square of Kalloni where it arrived again a few days ago, signaling the beginning of spring.

Last Saturday afternoon, a resident of Kalloni found in the Kardamia area in the yard of a house, a stork with a wound on the right wing, which could not fly. The finding that it was the – everyone’s beloved – stork, which for years has been living with its partner on a PPC pillar in the square of Kalloni, caused an immediate reaction from citizens, who informed the rescuers of the Scout Wildlife Rescue Team, who distinguished themselves in such operations in recent times. The rescuers rushed to the scene, picked up the unfortunate bird and transported it, in a safe manner, to the Scouts’ home in Molyvos, where it was offered first aid, food, water and security.

The next day he was placed in a special box for shipment and delivered to the ship from Mytilini to Piraeus, where he was received by members of the “ANIMA” Wildlife Protection and Care Association, who provided him with appropriate medical care.

According to today’s information, the “Stork of the Square”, which since the beginning of March has returned to its nest with its mate, as every year, suffered a wound from an electric shock. Everyone’s goal is, as soon as he gets well, to return back to Lesbos and be released in good health in the exact same area where he was found.

“As trained rescuers of the Scout Wildlife Rescue Team of the Hellenic Scout Corps and ambassadors of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, we continue the collection of injured, orphaned and abandoned mammals, birds, reptiles, marine organisms, etc. on the island of Lesbos, wanting to be an important contributor to the protection of wild life and a co-supporter of environmental organizations and Rescue and Care Centers by actively participating in the protection of the environment, in the management of natural resources and in maintaining the balance of ecosystems!” Elpiniki Deligiannis, the regional director of Scouts of Lesvos, said in this regard.
