“Our aim is to create an Organization harmonized with European regulations and the framework required by sustainable urban mobility”, says the Ministry of Transport
The improvement of urban transport in Thessaloniki was announced by Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport at the Council of Ministers that took place today, Friday (29/3) at Megaros Maximos, with the aim of creating an OASTH harmonized with European regulations and within the framework required by sustainable urban mobility.
The proposal of the political leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to the Council of Ministers, regarding the new urban transport model in Thessaloniki, aims not only to solve the Organization’s perennial problems, but to fully upgrade the city’s transport.
The Ministry’s plan includes, among other things, its liquidation OASTH, pending since 2017 when it was nationalized, in order to create a new, correct and functional Organization in terms of the next decades. And this is because despite the improvement of the Agency’s performance in the last period, there is still an operational weakness, mainly due to its overdue obligations and the difficulty of executing the transportation project.
“Our goal is to create an Organization harmonized with European regulations and the framework required by sustainable urban mobility. The improvement of the transport work provided and the consistency towards the citizens in its execution are our fundamental priority. In this context, the role of OSETH, both at the level of strategic planning and supervision, is changing and being upgraded” notes the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure in its announcement.
The urban transport restructuring plan of Thessaloniki is based on the following basic principles:
– Abolition, through the liquidation process in operation of the OASTH and establishment of a new public Agency, in full compliance with the provisions of the Regulation of the E.C. 1370/2007.
– Execution of a transport project under the supervision and control of OSETH, as its 100% subsidiary.
– Execution of a transport project by the “New OSETH” and assignment of the remaining to private individuals, through competitive procedures by the OSETH. This process is still followed today, through the assignments made to KTEL. However, the goal is to modernize and adapt to the long-term needs of the city, taking into account the upcoming operation of the metro (this is already done today with KTEL).
-The “New OASTH” will undertake the transportation project that it will be able to implement consistently for the citizens.
