The coffin was covered with the Pontic flag and the Greek flag, there was a Pontian salute and Pontic songs were played. Michalis Charalambidis was the one who proposed in 1994 to the Parliament to adopt the recognition of May 19 as Pontic Genocide Remembrance Day.
His family asked instead of wreaths to support the reconstruction of the small church in Aetochori Evros, the village of Michalis Charalambidis, which was burnt in the recent fires.
The Holy Temple was erected by the ancestors of Michalis when they settled in Aetochori from Santa of Pontus, after the Genocide.
There were many PASOK officials who attended, such as the president of the party, Nikos Androulakis, the secretary Andreas Spyropoulos, the parliamentary representative Dimitris Mantzos, the MP Pavlos Christidis, Kostas Laliotis, as well as Stefanos Tzoumakas, Panagiotis Lafazanis, Panagiotis Kouroumplis, the president of the WTO George Varithimiadis and others.
The funeral will take place tomorrow Saturday at 11:00 am, in the Holy Church of Agios Christopher Aetochori, Alexandroupoli, the exodus service will be sung and then the burial will take place.
