Why is it difficult to find staff in tourism?
Representatives from 100 businesses in the hospitality industry will be present today, 30/3, at the “Tourism Career Day” of the Public Employment Service (DYPA) at the Stadium of Peace and Friendship, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., looking for workers for over 3,000 jobs.
Speaking to APE-MPE, the commander of DYPA, Spyros Protopsaltis, declares that participating businesses that operate throughout Greece include hotel units, travel agencies, car rental businesses, catering businesses, airport service businesses and others.
As he points out, they are all reputable and it is an honor that they once again trust DYPA to help them find the right staff for their needs.
The specialties they are looking for are staff of all skill levels, namely: air ticket and hotel reservation clerks, secretarial support clerks, passenger and aircraft service clerks, accountants and assistant accountants, receptionists, chefs and kitchen staff, service clerks, professions in the field of beauty and wellness, lifeguards, cleaning staff, plumbers, airport information officers, drivers, storekeepers, sales consultants, customer service representatives, body fitters, painters, electricians, car mechanics, etc.
Why is it difficult to find staff?
In response to a question about the difficulty of tourist companies to find staff and whether the thematic “Career Days” of DYPA can help them find the staff they need, Mr. Protopsaltis states that, in recent years, this exact contradiction has been observed . “Tourism companies, while offering many jobs of various specialties, cannot easily find the staff they want and who will be able to respond adequately to their needs.”
According to the head of the DYPA, “the causes of this deficit are based either on the so-called brain drain, as many potential workers in the tourism sector left our country in the previous years of the crisis, or on skills mismatch, i.e. the unemployed people do not have the skills that businesses are looking for or that many are not particularly attracted to seasonal work and work in the tourism industry and focus on looking for permanent employment in another industry.”
“At DYPA, as I have repeated several times, we listen to the modern needs of the market and try to harmonize our actions according to the requirements of the time.
In the field of tourism, the messages we receive are that there is a great need for staff and we “respond” to this need with innovative actions, which can have visible and measurable results.
In this direction, are also the “Career Days” in Tourism that we are organizing today at SEF, where representatives from 100 businesses in the hospitality sector are looking for workers for over 3,000 jobs.
We believe that this new way of unfiltered connection between employees and businesses is proven to be effective. In essence, we are supporting the tourism industry with new tools, which only aim to alleviate the problem more effectively and more targeted” comments Mr. Protopsaltis.
Great response
Regarding the effectiveness of such actions, the DYPA commander notes that the “Career Days” organized today, 30/3, at SEF for tourism are the second in a row, after the first event organized a year ago at Helexpo and the which was focused on tourism and catering, while the online European Tourism “Career Day”, Work in Greece-Filoxenia, which was recently organized, was also mediated.
As he emphasizes, in this two-day event of the first event last March, the response of the citizens was impressive. Attendance reached 2,000, while the number of confirmed hires exceeded 300.
“It’s obviously not enough. However, the specific actions are a compass for where and how we should move.
In the near future, a new pairing platform is also coming, which I believe will significantly contribute to finding work for those looking for work and to finding employees for companies looking for staff”, underlines Mr. Protopsaltis.
And he adds that the online European Tourism “Career Day” Work in Greece-Filoxenia, organized for the first time last February, through the EURES National Coordination Office, also had a great response.
According to the data of DYPA, more than 200 companies participated in the event, with over 1,300 jobs and the aim was to bring together Greek and European citizens looking for work with the companies that are active in tourism, hospitality and catering and are looking for suitable staff for jobs throughout Greece.
The participation exceeded 1,000 interested parties from different European countries, including Greece.
“We have designed this new innovative action to match labor supply and demand with specific and targeted features and we will repeat it very soon in the coming weeks” announced the DYPA commander.
