The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis, met today with the European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius.

The discussion, which took place in a very friendly atmosphere, focused on ways to further strengthen cooperation and promote synergies between our country and European institutions on issues related to tackling the Climate Crisis, with particular emphasis on the triptych Prevention-Preparedness-Resilience. The excellent cooperation of our country with the European Commission in the framework of both the European Civil Protection Mechanism and rescEU was also highlighted.

Mr. Stylianidis underlined that the decision of the Prime Minister to establish a special Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, is a practical proof that dealing with the consequences of the climate crisis is a top priority for the Greek Government. He noted the inseparable link between the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, and spoke of the importance of preventive action in implementing an integrated strategy.

In addition, the Minister stressed that Greece aspires to function as a promoter of collective action not only nationally, but also at European and international level. He also highlighted the need to strengthen the European Civil Protection Mechanism and rescEU, which will give a new dimension to European solidarity, improving overall European preparedness and resilience.

For his part, the European Commissioner stressed the constructive cooperation of our country with the European Mechanism, emphasizing that “Greece really understands the stakes of climate change” and assuring that our country “will never be left alone” in facing challenges that associated with the climate crisis.
