Standing only a few centimeters tall, the Kakaratul is covered in reddish silky fur and is blind as it lives below the surface of the ground
Rare photographs of a small mammal (Marsupial mole) that lives in the vast deserts of Australia have come to light after it was spotted by local Aboriginal rangers in a National Park in northwestern Australia.
Known as kakaratul in the local Aboriginal language, it has been spotted by humans a handful of times in the past decade and even fewer… photographed.
“The first thoughts of some people who saw the photos were that it was an April Fool’s joke. But it’s real,” desert wildlife expert Garrett Catt told the ABC.
Only a few centimeters tall, the Kakaratul is covered in reddish silky fur and is blind as it lives below the surface of the ground where it quickly digs with its front feet into the sand and disappears in the blink of an eye!
It is estimated that in the Australian desert there are still many species of animals that have not been recorded and recognized in official lists, as explained by Mr. Katt, who is an executive of the organization “Alliance of Aboriginal Desert”, even though Australia is covered by 1/3 of deserts, the human presence, with the exception of Aboriginal tribes, is minimal.
