If you have the same fondness for donuts, it’s time to learn how you can make them yourself in your kitchen
Donuts have a special place in our hearts since they are the perfect sweetener for our breakfast or to accompany our coffee. And of course you can’t resist them and eat just one.
If you have the same fondness for donuts, it’s time to learn how you can make them yourself in your kitchen. The maple syrup glazed donut recipe below is just what you need!
Materials:
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- a little salt
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1/3 cup butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon of lemon zest
- 1 cup sour cream
- oil for frying
For the frosting:
- 3 cups of powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons of maple syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 3 tablespoons of butter
- 3-4 tablespoons of milk
Implementation:
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.
In a medium bowl, using a stand mixer, beat the eggs, sugar, vanilla and lemon zest until pale and thick. Slowly add the melted butter and beat until smooth. Add half the cream and beat well to combine. Add the rest of the cream and beat until fully combined.
Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the solids and use a spatula to mix until combined.
Spoon the dough onto a large piece of plastic wrap and wrap tightly. Refrigerate the donut dough for at least an hour or overnight.
When you are ready to make the donuts, heat a pan with enough oil (enough to cover the donuts) on a medium heat to 200 degrees.
While your oil is heating, lightly flour a work surface and roll out the donut dough. Sprinkle with a little flour and roll out to a thickness of about 2 cm. Using a donut cutter cut the 12 doughnuts.
Once the oil is hot, gently place 2-3 loukumas at a time into the oil to cook. Once the donuts float to the top, let them cook for about 1 more minute before flipping them over and frying them for an additional minute on the other side.
Once cooked remove them from the pot, using a slotted spoon to drain the excess oil into the pot. Place the cooked donuts on a wire rack to cool and drain off any excess oil.
Let them cool for a few minutes before dipping them in the frosting.
For the frosting:
Put the butter in a saucepan over medium heat to melt. Once melted, raise the temperature a bit until golden brown. Remove from heat and transfer to a mixing bowl.
Add the powdered sugar, vanilla, maple syrup and 2 tablespoons of milk. Whisk all ingredients together until smooth. If frosting is too thick, add additional milk, 1 tablespoon at a time.
Once the donuts have cooled slightly, dip 3/4 of the donuts into the glaze, and return the glazed donuts to the grill.
Let the donuts sit for about 10 minutes to allow the glaze to set a bit before serving.
