The 63-year-old was originally from Athens and had traveled to Ancient Olympia to take part in the Truce route
A tragic incident occurred yesterday in Ancient Olympia when a 63-year-old athlete collapsed shortly before the end of the historic road in Ancient Olympia, between Platanos and Pelopion, at the height of the Heraklion community.
According to patrisnews.com the unfortunate man who often took part in endurance or semi-endurance roads, a few minutes before his collapse, had been warned to stop and follow the rest of the route with the bus that followed the athletes, as some had found that his strength was failing him.
However, according to what was supported by the organizers, he did not want to stop, taking the responsibility to continue, probably seeing that there was little time left for his finish. He was immediately taken by ambulance to K.Y. Ancient Olympia, but essentially he had arrived there without his heart beating, having already passed away.
The 63-year-old was from Athens and had come to take part in the Truce route, as had several other people of his age, who were also advised to be careful and if they could not finish, to obey the doctors’ instructions and stop .
Disturbed by this unpleasant incident, the President of the Commonwealth of Olympia, Sofia Hintziou Kontogianni, stated the following: “I express my sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. I’m devastated by what happened. I feel really bad about all of this. All the necessary help was immediately by his side, but he could not be saved.”
