With the aim of rebuilding the biodiversity of Parnitha, the largest lung of Attica, after the devastating fires of recent years, TÜV AUSTRIA Hellas and the Sani/Ikos Hotel Group, as part of the sustainability and corporate social responsibility programs they implement, created the program SAVE THE BEE – The Parnitha Bee Project. In particular, the TÜV AUSTRIA Hellas and SANI/IKOS Group jointly undertake the beekeeping, replacing all recorded beehives lost in the fires. Thanks to SAVE THE BEE – The Parnitha Bee Project, approximately 235 thousand acres of land in Parnitha will benefit from pollination, as 1,500,000 bees they will fertilize 19.4 billion flowers, over a period of three years. Providing food, as well as the daily care and maintenance of the bees, is undertaken by the project sponsors, in collaboration with the professional beekeepers of the non-profit organization Bee for Planet.

At a later stage, it is also planned, in collaboration with Hellenic Agricultural Organization-ELGO “Dimitra”, the creation of botanical gardens near the apiaries, for the food of the bees. Alongside, the Sericulture and Beekeeping Laboratory of the Agricultural University of Athens has undertaken monitoring and measurements related to the progress of the project to capture and record the change in biodiversity within and outside the bee impact areas over the next three years.

The official announcement of the program was made on the occasion of her celebration World Earth Day – April 22in the area of ​​Parnitha, in the presence of its contractors, TÜV AUSTRIA Hellas and Sani/Ikos Group, the Implementation Agency Bee for Planet and of the Attica Region, under whose auspices the program is implemented. The employees of the two companies and their familiesthey had the chance to be informed about the program and its benefits in the biodiversity of Parnitha, through various entertaining and informative activities for young and old. It was preceded by a guided tour of the three focal points for placing the bees, at Thracomacedones, the Phyli and Varymbopias well as detailed information on the stages of supervision, recording and study of the program by the Agricultural University of Athens.

H Mrs. Eleni Andreadi Director of Sustainability & Corporate Social Responsibility of the Sani/Ikos Group noted: “Recognizing the important role of bees in the restoration of ecosystems that have been affected by fires, such as Parnitha, in the Sani/Ikos Group we have decided to join forces with TÜV Austria Hellas in an effort to strengthen the natural regeneration of the mountain’s biodiversity . This initiative is part of the protection programs of important Mediterranean ecosystems, such as the forests, the wetlands of Sani in Halkidiki, the dolphin populations of Thermaikos and the colonies of pollinating insects, which we implement as part of our environmental strategy”.
