Students of the 2nd Lyceum who will visit tomorrow (Wednesday 24/4) and the day after tomorrow the facilities of the Biology Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) will get to know the science of Biology in an interactive way.

Students will attend presentations on DNA and perspectives and developments for humans and the environment in the 21st century, and participate in thematic workshops on – among others – DNA identification and polymorphism, DNA inheritance and chromosomes, DNA and the environment.

The two-day event is organized by the Department of Biology of AUTH, in collaboration with the Panhellenic Union of Bioscientists, on the occasion of the celebration of World DNA Day (April 25) to celebrate the discovery of the DNA double helix (1953) and the completion of genome mapping of man (2003).

According to the organizers, biological literacy is essential for the personal and social integration of all people, because it provides the tools to understand ourselves and the world in which we live and on which we depend. “Biology is a dominant science of the 21st century and its applications have already begun to significantly change people’s daily lives. It is necessary today for students to be equipped with the knowledge that will allow them to realize their position and responsibility towards the environment and will help them make future decisions about their health, their daily habits, social ethics and their work”, they report.

The Department of Biology of AUTH will be visited by students from the 1st and 2nd GEL Kalamaria, the 1st GEL Pylaia, the 2nd GEL Evosmos, the 10th GEL Thessaloniki, the 15th GEL Thessaloniki, the 12th GEL Thessaloniki, the 3rd GEL Stavroupoli, the 2nd GEL Neapolis , the GEL Sindou, the GEL Mygdonias and the IGEL Mantoulidis.
