We traveled to mountainous Arcadia in the company of the 3rd generation Volkswagen Tiguan. By Aris Galanopoulos
The new SUV comes with a modern design and features adopted from the group’s electric models. At the same time, the MQB evo platform gives an excellent driving behavior, while it has been technologically upgraded with all the latest driver assistance systems.
Designers paid a lot of attention to the aerodynamics of the car, which is confirmed by the reduction of the drag coefficient from 0.33 of the previous generation to 0.28. In terms of dimensions, the new Tiguan has grown in length by 3 cm, reaching 4.54 meters, while the wheelbase is almost the same at 2.68 meters. Spaces and amenities are top notch with practicality getting a high grade due to the presence of many storage pockets for small items. The luggage space has also increased by 37 lt. at 652 lt.
The new Volkswagen Tiguan is available with petrol engines (TSI), diesel (TDI) mild hybrid turbo petrol engines (eTSI) and plug-in hybrid systems (eHybrid), which will be offered exclusively in combination with the automatic dual-clutch transmission (DSG 7 or 6 relationships). For the PHEV versions, there are two options with a power of 204 and 272 PS and a battery with an energy capacity of 19.7 kWh, which ensures, as mentioned above, an electric range of over 100 km.
The most interesting MHEVs are based on the 1.5 L four-cylinder turbo engine and power of 130 PS and 150 PS. In addition, there will be a 2-liter turbocharged set with 204 PS and 265 PS. Of course, the options for the Tiguan also have to do with turbo diesel engines with the 2.0 L (TDI) in two performance levels, 150 PS and 193 PS.
In our hands during our trip we had the 1.5 MHEV 150 PS version, which offers excellent comfort on the highway. There, the consumption reached a little over 6 lt./100 km, however in an urban background it can exceed 7 lt./100 km. It remains the robust SUV, without sacrificing flexibility in the city.
In terms of prices, the new Volkswagen Tiguan starts at 34,300 euros for the basic 1.5 MHEV 150 PS.
