The proposed projects concern seven areas of Aegialia
One line of erosion protection works on the coastline of the Gulf of Corinthy, which, according to the study, are planned to be carried out in its area Achaiawere examined by the members of the Committee for Environment, Spatial Planning, Energy and Natural Resources of the Regional Council of Western Greece, in order to give an opinion on the Environmental Impact Study.
According to the document of the Directorate of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Region of Western Greece, which was discussed at the committee meeting and presents the RES-MPE, “the purpose of the implementation of the projects is to protect the area of the southern shores of the Gulf of Corinth and specifically the coastline between Aegira and Lambirion, on the borders of Achaia, from the corrosion phenomenon, simultaneously seeking to reverse the corrosive mechanism”.
“Essentially,” states the same document, “these are anti-corrosion protection projects, such as removals, shielding on the coast, construction of transverse cantilevers, artificial replenishment of the coast, and realignment of the existing coastline.”
The proposed anti-corrosion protection projects in Achaia actually concern seven areas of Aegialia, i.e. Aegira, Akrata, Porovitsa beach, Platanou beach, Diakopto, Selianitika and Logos.
In the above coastal areas, the permanent residents reach around 7,000, while in the summer months they increase significantly, since there are many holiday homes, as well as accommodation, because they are a holiday destination.
In particular, the proposed projects are the following:
- For the area of Akrata and Aegeira, it is proposed to protect the replenishment of the coast by a reef terrace parallel to the coast. Also, the realignment of the coast is proposed, due to the negative effect of structures located too close to the coast.
- For the Porovitsi beach area, the construction of shore protection, transverse cantilevers and artificial replenishment, as well as realignment works are proposed.
- For Platanou beach, the construction of 6 transverse overhangs is proposed, while in the western part the coast will be replenished with sediment which will be protected by the construction of a reef terrace along the entire length, as well as by the construction of a transverse overhang at the westernmost end of the beach of the study area. To achieve the best results from the replenishment of the coast with sediment, the temporary constructions located in two locations of the beach will be removed, achieving the realignment of the coastline, with the aim of restoring the original beach line.
- For the area of Diakoptos, it is proposed to completely replace part of the shielding of the beach front with artificial replenishment and transverse cantilevers. Therefore, artificial shoreline replenishment projects are proposed using 14 transverse cantilevers, with a total length of approximately 1.6 km.
- In the areas of Selianitika and Logos, coastal replenishment works are proposed with the addition of a transverse cantilever at the eastern end of the artificial replenishment, and shore shielding works. Also, realignment is proposed at 4 points, where problems occur, such as serious undermining, damage to the wall and subsidence of the beach.
- In the Labiri area, replenishment works, shore realignment works at the two jetties and protection works are proposed.
According to the document of the Department of Environment and Spatial Planning of the Region of Western Greece, which was discussed at the meeting of the Committee on Environment, Spatial Planning, Energy and Natural Resources, the proposed projects are in line with the objective, which is related to the promotion of climate change adaptation , of risk prevention and management, in the context of which projects are planned to protect the main coasts of the Western Greece Region from erosion.
Specifically, the projects are related to the goals of reducing flooding and erosion, safeguarding and protecting the environment, as well as protecting and promoting areas of particular environmental and aesthetic value.
Regarding the decision of the Environment, Spatial Planning, Energy and Natural Resources committee, the chairman proposed the positive opinion on the Environmental Impact Study, based on the comments and the proposed environmental conditions from the competent agency, and finally the committee gave a positive opinion.
