In total, during the first four months of the year, the airport’s traffic reached 7.7 million passengers
Passenger traffic at Athens International Airport is on an upward trajectory, confirming market estimates that in 2024 it will “fly” to… 30 million passengers.
The impressive performance for Athens airport continues, as well as in the month of April it “took off”, recording an increase of 16.3% compared to April 2023, reaching 2.49 million passengers. International passengers were 1.79 million compared to 1.47 million last year with an increase of 21.7% while domestic passengers were 688 thousand compared to 660 thousand last year with an increase of 4.1%.
Overall, during the first four months of the year, the airport’s traffic reached 7.7 million passengers, marking an increase of 16.5%. In the first 4 months the increase was more than impressive. In January 12.7%, in February 21.6%, in March 23.6% and in April 21.7%. Passenger traffic, both domestic and foreign, showed an increase of 8.4% and 20.2% respectively.
Flights
The number of flights at Athens International Airport during the first four months of 2024 reached 67,447, recording an increase of 13.5% compared to the corresponding period in 2023. Both domestic and international flights increased by 5.9% and 19.3% compared to 2023.
Predictions for a record year
Passenger traffic forecasts for 2024 have already been revised upwards following double-digit growth in the first quarter of the year.
The managing director of AIA Yiannis Paraschis in the context of the first general meeting of shareholders after listing on the Greek Stock Exchange, he had stated: “Passenger traffic recorded a 16.5% increase in the first three months of this year, compared to the corresponding period of 2023. This is a significant development , which was also reflected in the financial figures. This leads us to an upward revision of the forecast for the overall course of the year.”
Based on the above passenger traffic data, market players estimate that 2024 will be a new record year for “Eleftherios Venizelos”, exceeding 30 million passengers, given that the summer season has not yet started and Athens is a destination with great potential, as shown by the traffic statistics from abroad.
Thus, estimating that it will “fly” even higher in 2024, “Eleftherios Venizelos” opens its “wings” in markets that have a large share of passengers with a high consumer profile, such as the USA, Canada, China and India. “This is why we are investing in the development of medium and long-haul destinations,” said the CEO, Yiannis Paraschis, at the recent general meeting of shareholders. An evolution to which both the expanded collaborations that AIA enters into with international airlines contribute, as well as the investment programs of domestic air carriers. Aegean has already announced the investment in larger A321 aircraft, which allow flights of up to 7.5 hours, which will enable it to fly to Asia, Central Africa and the Persian Gulf.
Profitability
It is recalled that AIA’s revenues also improved, increasing by 15.3 million euros or 15.3%, from 99.4 million euros in the first quarter of 2023 to 114.6 million euros in the corresponding quarter of this year, with all revenue streams to show significant improvement.
In particular, revenues and other income from aviation activities amounted to 86.3 million euros, marking an increase of 14.8% compared to the previous year.
Increase primarily attributable to the increase in Air Charges revenue and Airport Modernization and Development Fee revenue, while Air Charge prices remained stable. In addition, revenue and other income from non-aeronautical activities amounted to €28.4 million, i.e. increased by 16.9% compared to 2023. This improvement is mainly due to the increase in revenue from commercial activities and services vehicle parking.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), in the first quarter of 2024, amounted to 66.5 million euros, increased by 8.7 million euros or 15.1% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year .
Profits before taxes in the period January – March 2024 amounted to 37 million euros, increased by 8.5 million, compared to 2023, while profits after taxes reached 28.5 million euros, increased by 6.5 million . euros from the corresponding period of the previous year.
