Rallies in Lesvos and Chios against the new immigrant structures

by

Two concentrations took place today on the initiative of the North Aegean Region in Chios and Mytilene. The gathered expressed their opposition to the design for the creation Closed Controlled Structures in Lesvos at Vastria, and in Chios at Tholos.

The mayors of Mytilene, Stratis Kytelis and Chios, Stamatis Karmantzis, were absent from the two rallies, separating their position from the context of the rallies.

At the gathering in Chios, the keynote speaker was the vice-governor of the island, Pantelis Vroulis, while other representatives of local bodies also greeted. In total, they demanded respect for the decision of the Municipal Council to create only one structure for registration and identification with a capacity of up to 500 people.

The rally in Chios was followed by a march in the political office of the Minister of Immigration and Asylum and Chios MP Notis Mitarakis and at the Chios Port Authority where relevant resolutions were served.

A similar gathering with the same request took place in the city of Mytilene, where the governor Costas Moutzouris and representatives of other bodies spoke.

The reaction of New Democracy

In a joint statement, the Prefectural Committees of Lesvos, Chios and Samos of New Democracy note that “the low participation of the people in the rallies organized today in Chios and Lesvos, the non-organization of a similar one in Samos, the refusal to support the mobilizations by the mayors of the islands and open stores should not be taken as a “blank check”. But it is a strong demonstration of the islands’ confidence in the results of government policy in managing the migration crisis. The islanders turn their backs on the divisive policy of the organizers and the impasses it cultivates. “They want immigration to be a thing of the past and our islands to be on a path of progress and development.”
