“We are accelerating the path towards climate neutrality and social justice” said the mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas
It was inaugurated by the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, at the Serafio Center for Culture and Sports, the Office for Tackling Energy Poverty, which is expected to be an important support center for the city’s energy-vulnerable households.
The Mayor of Athens noted: “Today, we are inaugurating the Office for Tackling Energy Poverty with 60 certified partners, who will go door to door, find vulnerable households and propose actions and solutions.” They will also be welcomed here at the office and offered a range of benefits and financial programs. At the same time, they will also have a card with a barcode that will show their name and through this, they will have a series of discounts in businesses. At the same time, we founded the Athenian Energy Alliance, in which 8 neighboring municipalities participate, as well as municipalities from other regions, from all over Greece. The goal is to build energy communities and then produce clean electricity and offer it at low or no cost to our poorest, most vulnerable fellow citizens. Together, we are turning the page in Athens and accelerating the path towards climate neutrality and social justice.”
For his part, Ioannis Georgizas, Managing Director of the Development and Tourism Promotion Company of the Municipality of Athens (EATA), mentioned the three ways in which Athenian citizens, who are energy vulnerable, can contact the Office for Combating Energy Poverty: To be served, they can either call the Citizens Service Line 1595 making an appointment with an energy consultant, or send an informative email to the email address [email protected], or visit the Office created especially for this purpose at the Municipality Office of Athens. With the help of the Technical University of Athens and the Sustainable City of the Network of Municipalities to which the Municipality of Athens belongs, we managed to prove certified by the E.E. which household is judged as energy-vulnerable, taking into account factors such as financial possibilities, the construction elements of the building, but also social criteria”.
More than 60 employees of the Municipality of Athens have been trained and have received Energy Consultant and Mentor certification. Through on-site visits, certified Energy Consultants and Mentors help to understand energy consumption costs, suggest ways to reduce costs with small-scale interventions. Specifically, they have undertaken:
- the assessment and identification of energy vulnerable households.
- information on the benefits of energy upgrading interventions.
- the completion of a Google Form with the necessary data (energy consumption, property data, etc.) in order to generate proposals for energy upgrading of the property and advice through a technical report from the Office.
- scheduling appointments and meetings with citizens for life.
