With the drawing of the jury and the arrangement of procedural issues, the trial of those responsible for retirement home in Thessaloniki, which in August 2020 there was a flurry of Covid-19 cases, resulting in the death of 28 elderly people from complications related to the coronavirus.

The two managing directors of the nursing home (brothers), the first as responsible for scientific matters and the second as responsible for administrative matters, were referred to the court bench to be tried. The charge against them is that of violating disease prevention measures that resulted in the death of a large number of people.

The proceedings were adjourned until tomorrow, so the trial is expected to begin on the merits with the examination of the first witnesses. The indictment includes more than 70 witnesses, among them relatives of the elderly, while the trial, according to estimates by the civil action and defense lawyers, is expected to last several weeks, maybe even months.

The will with which the two defendants were referred to trial is based on the conclusions of an investigation carried out by inspectors of the National Transparency Authority, which was prompted by a prosecutor’s investigation. Among other things, it was found – according to the referring will – a series of violations of the prevention measures against the spread of the coronavirus, such as excessive numbers of patients (156 instead of 88), non-compliance with the distances in the rooms for the elderly and in common areas, non-conduct of preventive molecular tests detection of the virus for the early detection of cases, etc.

For their part, the two defendants – who after their apologies were released without restrictive conditions – deny the charge. According to information, in their apologies they seem to have claimed that they implemented measures to avoid and limit the spread of the virus, stressing that they followed the protection measures before the outbreak of the pandemic, as well as after the appearance of the first case of the virus, while citing social reasons for overcoming of the number of patients.
