The unemployment rate in the country was 10.8% in April this year, compared to the downwardly revised 11.5% in April 2023 and the upwardly revised 10.8% in March 2024. The unemployed amounted to 521,295 people, marking a decrease of 20,910 people compared to April 2023 (3.9%) and an increase of 6,072 people compared to March 2024 (1.2%).
The unemployment rate for women rose to 13.4% from 15% in April last year and for men to 8.5% from 8.7%.
By major age groups, in the 15-24 year old groups the unemployment rate rose to 22.6% from 29.5% in April 2023 and in the 25-74 year old age group to 10.1% from 10.4%.
Also according to the ELSTAT labor force survey, the employed amounted to 4,323,212 people, marking an increase of 150,157 people compared to April 2023 (3.6%) and by 52,408 people compared to March 2024 (1.2 %).
Meanwhile, people under 75 who are not in the labor force, or “people outside the labor force” (those not working or looking for work), amounted to 2,938,302 people, a decrease of 152,694 people compared to April 2023 (4.9%) and by 58,907 people compared to March 2024 (2%).
