He became a pioneer in his own way to advertise his area. THE Pantazis Chronopoulos he was the originator of the well-known “Sugar Town” – the subject of the award-winning film of the same name by Kimon Tsakiris – as he tried to “rehabilitate” several young men of the place with girls even from abroad, due to the residents’ complaints about a lack of women. He lived through dramatic times during the fire season in his area and went down in history for the peculiar way of managing the Municipality Sugary for many years, successively and for a long time gaining the trust of his fellow citizens.

Pantazis Chronopoulos, who met the acceptance of the inhabitants of Zacharos, had friends and enemies, as a result of the harsh and sharp language he used. This, after all, was one of the main reasons why, even as mayor, he had frequent adventures with the State and the Judiciary. In the last months, his health problems worsened, forcing him to stay at his home in Zaharo all the time, with his son and grandson nearby. It had cost him, however, the death of his daughter Amalia who died at a young age suddenly nineteen years ago.

He was a retired chief constable of the Hellenic Police and served as mayor of the Municipality of Zacharos from October 2002 until July 2010, when he was put on holiday, by decision of the Ministry of the Interior. He contested the mayoralty again in the municipal elections of November 2010 and was elected mayor with a percentage of 56%, but without, however, formally being able to exercise his duties, being on holiday. In May 2014, he was re-elected mayor of Zacharos for a fourth term, winning in the first round, despite his various legal entanglements and the fact that he was formally on holiday. Therefore, he exercised his duties for a limited time, as his faction was forced to appoint a new mayor, with a decision taken in November 2014.
