Great inconvenience for drivers on the Athens-Corinth National Highway due to the fire that broke out last night after a truck overturned at the 75.5th km, at the height of the Isthmus bridge. To extinguish the fire, 28 firefighters with 9 vehicles tried to extinguish the fire and sprayed special extinguishing liquid.

According to the Traffic, the National Highway from the Loutraki junction to the Epidaurus junction remains closed in the direction of Patras.

The old national road, at the height of Aghii Theodori, on the way to Patras, is also closed.

The traffic police are diverting the traffic at the Loutraki exit and through the sinking bridge the drivers are heading towards the Epidaurus junction and towards Corinth.

The flow to Athens is open.

Because of movement of non-residents until noon on Sunday, the New National Road will be detoured in the direction of Athens. The demolition is expected to be completed by the middle of next week.

A while ago, the demolition work of the bridge over the National Highway which was damaged by the fire due to the high temperature developed by the fire started.

“It was decided that it should be demolished,” Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Nikos Tahiaos told SKAI.

The fire was extinguished around 23:40. The tanker was carrying fuel and when it overturned, it was engulfed in flames, resulting in a large fire. Due to the fire, the Traffic Police stopped the traffic of vehicles on both the old and the new Athens-Corinth highway, resulting in queues of kilometers.

With the fire extinguished, shortly after midnight, the Elefsina toll road to Corinth was opened first and traffic gradually began to recover.

No other vehicle was involved

To extinguish the fire, 28 firefighters with 9 vehicles tried to extinguish the fire and sprayed special extinguishing liquid.

As reported by the Fire Department, no other vehicle was involved in the accident. The driver of the tanker was extricated unharmed, has no burns, but has some bumps from the rollover. He has been taken to Corinth hospital, while there are no other injured.

From the first moment, the Fire Department rushed to the scene and the forces were immediately reinforced due to the extent of the fire front that was created.

According to korinthostv.gr, the Corinth Fire Service was alerted after a call that the tanker carrying fuel had exploded. At the scene, as reported by the local media, there were constant explosions.

The fire even spread to the slope of the highway.

Thus, the Kalamaki tolls were closed, resulting in the diversion of vehicular traffic at the Epidaurus interchange to the Athens-bound traffic stream and at the Loutraki Junction Bridge to the Corinth-bound traffic stream. Also, traffic was stopped on the Old National Highway of Athens Corinth at the height of Aghii Theodori and also at the height of the Elefsina toll road, resulting in queues of kilometers with immobilized vehicles. In Patras, all vehicles were diverted to the Kiatos toll road.
