Thessaloniki: The teacher who “married” teaching with music

With the port of his life music, a teacher managed to set sail for a different journey in knowledge, accompanied by young primary school students in western Thessaloniki. Dimitris Karageorgos united his love for teaching and music, always having by his side, for three decades, his guitar, which he uses when he believes that he can help in the educational process. And the students of the versatile teacher have “embraced” his original idea.

“Music and song are the port of my life. The love for music is love at first sight. “I also learned this from my students, who” embraced “our activity and all became a group, a voice”, says Mr. Karageorgos to the Athenian / Macedonian News Agency.

“Music relaxes, tames and helps the senses. It relaxes, unloads, as it helps in the purity of the brain and in the mood for reading “, underlines Mr. Karageorgos, pointing out that” in the small classes, music is necessary in all lessons, in language and mathematics “.

“Rhythm,” he explains, “stimulates their interest in new knowledge and has very positive results. Through songs and music, my young students learn letters and spelling, while rhythm also helps with math. In the older classes it is difficult to integrate music in the lessons, however in language, when we study a melodic poem, we sing it with the guitar, so that the children get to know the melody, beyond the verse. We also sing when we have free time, on excursions and at school holidays “.

It all started, he explains, with a guitar and the sounds of performers who have made history. So he took his first steps, “marrying” his work with music and song. “My two daughters grew up this way. Our daily life was based on reading and immediately after, we relaxed with our voices, singing. Both of my daughters, imagine, sing and brag about it. “So, I transferred this daily routine of my house to the class, to my free time and to the holidays”, he notes.

Dimitris Karageorgos has been teaching in primary school for 31 years, he is self-taught in music and what makes him really happy, as he says, is watching the development of some children who passed through his classes. He considers that it is important for teachers nowadays to emphasize mutual learning and to adapt education to the new requirements of the time. The profession of the teacher, apart from being a livelihood, is also a social function, he emphasizes and explains that what he loves most is to see his students, worthy and equipped, in the difficult social “center”.

Let’s not forget that many people choose to read with low music, as it helps them concentrate, emphasizes the “artist-teacher” and explains that the first example is his daughters. “There were also my students and today we sing together. My youngest daughter has also taken some professional steps, but her psychology won her over and she works in England. There are many of my students, who are involved in singing, after the contact they had in class. With the experience that the teachers have gained, we see if there is fatigue in the classroom, intensity that must be discharged with some activity, so that the students regain their concentration and energy. “Then the guitar and the song can play an important role”, concludes Mr. Karageorgos.
