The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. George Karagiannis, described the protection of the environment as a non-negotiable principle for the government, in the context of the parliamentary control.
As he said, the proof is that at the moment more than 30 interventions of environmental protection projects amounting to more than 1.5 billion euros are being implemented throughout the country.
“At the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, we are working towards the fortification of the country from the effects of climate change and the new conditions it creates, and we consider the protection of the environment non-negotiable,” he stressed.
Answering a topical question about the projects in the Erasinos stream, he stated that all the projects that are being implemented throughout Greece are environmentally licensed, while strict environmental conditions of construction and operation are also provided.
He described the specific stream as important, explaining that it is the recipient of the streams of the “Central Mediterranean” and the recipient of all the rainwater of the constructed works of the region, such as Athens International Airport, Attiki Odos, Varis – Koropiou Avenue, Olympiakos Center etc.
“In other words, it is not just a river, without any significance, as you try to reduce it to your question”, he noted and added that and made the need for intervention in the already insufficient natural riverbed even greater “.
He reiterated that all projects to be implemented are environmentally licensed. “I do not say that, the Council of State says it and not only with a decision,” he stressed.
“In order to confirm what I am saying – but mainly of the legality – on July 30, 2021, the Presidential Decree was published for the ratification of the determination of the boundaries of the Erasinos stream, after the consent of the CoE” he pointed out.
Regarding archaeological issues, he announced that in December 2020, a memorandum was signed with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Eastern Attica, which has full self-supervision.
“In the Erasinou stream we are doing an absolutely necessary project, for which in fact all the provisions of the current legislation have been observed and we follow all the rules of legality, in accordance with the decisions of the Council of State. And of course, this project is part of our broader, integrated planning for the flood protection of the country “concluded Mr. Karagiannis.
