The chilling video taken from the cabin of a plane that landed at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, in Athens, shows thick clouds of smoke covering the Varis- Koropiou where the fire front was raging that extended to many areas.

“The investigative authorities of the Fire Department and the Police have at their disposal visual material that clearly shows an arsonist setting fire to dry grass in Vari-Koropio, while a little further down, a drum with oil and putty was also found. When we have permission from the Arson Crimes Directorate of the Fire Department and ELAS, we will release the material to the public,” said Mr. Kikilias earlier.

As the Fire Department’s Spokesman Mr. Vathrakogiannis said, the fire started from low vegetation on Varis-Koropi Avenue, near the Evelpidon School and spread rapidly in the wider area with the help of very strong winds whose gusts reached 8 Beaufort.

For this reason, as he underlined, a warning message was initially issued by 112 and then two more messages for the removal of residents from the Lambrika and Kitsi Koropi areas.

“We are drawing everyone’s attention because the fires are quickly growing in size and becoming dangerous”, emphasized Mr. Vathrakogiannis.
