The British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures (BCRPM) intervened in the run-up to the elections so that the candidates could include in their program the just request for the repatriation of the Sculptures from the British Museum to the Acropolis Museum.

The letter, which asks the candidates for parliament to support the return of Sculptors of the Parthenon it has been sent to more than 600 members and friends of BCRPM so that they in turn can send it to their district politicians.

In addition, the letter has been posted on its website BCRPM so that anyone who wants to use it either as is or modify it according to the party they prefer.

On the occasion of the general election campaign for the permanent Greek request to the candidates for parliament, Cambridge University professor Paul Cartlitz, vice-president of BCRPM, said to ERT:

“The issue of the Parthenon Marbles is not just a dusty footnote of ancient history – but a hot modern diplomatic and cultural issue. Nothing less than the history – and reputation – of the West is at stake. We urge you to do everything you can to return the Marbles to where they truly belong as soon as possible.”

While he adds: “The British Museum has started negotiations with the Greek authorities for the return of the Marbles to Athens. The Conservative government will regret its failure to make the final gesture of freeing the Marbles, a gesture now supported by the British public.

It is up to the incoming Labor government to do the right thing – complete the process, celebrate the return of the Marbles and cement the friendship between the UK and Greece.”
