Changes to the unemployment benefit – but also to other benefits – were announced by the Minister of Labor Niki Kerameos, speaking to ERT.

Specifically, the unemployment benefit is expected to be linked to monthly wages of the dismissed person and not with the minimum wage as is currently the case. This means in practice that the allowance for an employee with a salary of 1000 euros who will be fired, will be able to reach 700 or 750 euros per month, from 507 euros which it is today.

The unemployment benefit would decreaseover the months, as the aim is to mobilize the unemployed to rejoin the labor market.

The allowance will be interrupted if the beneficiary rejects three proposals for work submitted by the Public Employment Service.

“The important thing here is that the shape is front-loaded. We want you to make a special effort to find employment. If you are offered three jobs that coincide with your individual action plan and you say no to all three, then you leave the unemployment fund,” the minister told ERT.

Regarding the reduction of insurance contributions he emphasized: “We want to support the workers, so that we can support them, but even more so, the total non-salary costs must also be reduced and businesses can move forward and contribute decisively to the stimulation of the economy and employment”.

The range of demographic measures includes planned increase in child benefit paid by OPECA. As the decline in births and the increase in nominal wages limit the beneficiaries of the allowance, the aim is to give the greatest support to those who have one or two children. Today, based on income criteria, they receive 28, 42 or 70 euros per month per child.

An adjustment is also being considered to the amount of the housing allowance. Today OPECA subsidizes the rent of economically vulnerable beneficiaries with up to 210 euros per month. The creation of a single platform through which the beneficiary will be able to receive all the benefits to which he is entitled with a single application is also underway.
