1863: Signed by treaty of london, by which George I is chosen as king of Greece and it is defined that his successors will represent the orthodox doctrine, while his coming of age, in order not to repeat the institution of the Regency, is defined immediately. With the same treaty it is defined that the geographical borders of the Greek Kingdom will be extended by the concession – annexation of Iptanes, as long as the Great Powers agree to this and the relevant wish is expressed by the Ionian Parliament.

1908: Female athletes compete for the first time in the moderns Olympic Gamesin London.

1930: The first FIFA World Cup begins in Montevideo, Uruguay with the match between France and Mexico (4-1). France’s Lisien Laurent scores the first goal in world cup history.

1972: The basketball player of Hercules Aristides Moumoglou achieves 145 points during his team’s match against BAO and creates an all-time record in the A’ Division of basketball. The match ends with a score of 170-94.

1978: His communist Albania Enver Hoxha breaks diplomatic relations with China and plunges into isolation.

1989: Former Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou marries Olympic Air stewardess Dimitra Liani in a third wedding at the Eleftherotria church in Politia, after a stormy romance that upset Greek and international public opinion.

2000: Stelios Tatasopoulos, one of the first Greek filmmakers. In 1931 he filmed the first Greek social film, the silent “Social Sapila”, while in 1951 he shot “Black Earth”, his second neorealist film about the hard life in the emery mines of Apiranthou, Naxos. (Born 1908)
