According to the updatedthe Emergency Weather Deterioration Bulletin (EDEK) issued today, Saturday, July 13, 2024 by National Weather Service (EMY), the south-westerly current that prevails in the lower levels of the atmosphere on the coasts of Africa and the Central Mediterranean will transport warm air masses to our region and cause very high temperatures in our country, which will last at least until Friday 19 /7.

The highest temperatures will occur in the interior of mainland Greece (mainly in the west and north) and in the islands of the eastern Aegean. In the coastal areas of the mainland the maximum temperature value will be 2 to 4 degrees lower due to the sea breeze. The minimum temperatures will fluctuate at high levels, especially from Monday 7/15.

1. Today Saturday (13-7-2024) the maximum temperature will reach:

a. In Macedonia, Thrace and Epirus 37 to 39 degrees and in central Macedonia locally 40 to 41 degrees Celsius.

b. In Sterea, Thessaly and Peloponnese 38 to 40 and locally 41 degrees Celsius.

c. In the Ionian, the islands of the Eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese and southern Crete, 36 to 38 degrees Celsius.

d. In the rest of the island country, 33 to 35 degrees Celsius.

e. In Attica their 38 to 39 degrees Celsius.

2. On Sunday (14-7-2024) high temperatures will prevail mainly in the west, the north, the islands of the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese. The maximum temperature will reach:

a. In Macedonia, Thrace and Epirus 38 to 40 degrees and locally in central Macedonia 41 to 42 degrees Celsius.

b. In western Sterea, Thessaly and western Peloponnese 40 to 42 degrees Celsius.

c. In eastern Sterea and eastern Peloponnese 40 and locally 41 degrees Celsius.

d. In the Ionian, the islands of the Eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese and southern Crete, 37 to 39 degrees Celsius.

e. In the rest of the island country, 34 to 36 degrees Celsius.

f. In Attica their 38 to 39 degrees Celsius.

3. On Monday (15-7-2024) the maximum temperature will reach:

a. In Macedonia, Thrace and Epirus 39 to 40 degrees and in central Macedonia locally 41 to 42 degrees Celsius.

b. In western Sterea, Thessaly and western Peloponnese 41 to 42 and possibly locally 43 degrees Celsius.

c. In eastern Sterea and eastern Peloponnese 40 to 42 degrees Celsius.

d. In the Ionian, the islands of the Eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese and southern Crete, 37 to 39 degrees Celsius.

e. In the rest of the island country, 33 to 36 degrees Celsius.

f. In Attica their 38 to 39 degrees Celsius.

4. On Tuesday (16-7-2024) the maximum temperature will reach:

a. In Macedonia, Thrace and Epirus 40 to 41 and locally 42 degrees Celsius.

b. In western Sterea, Thessaly and western Peloponnese 41 to 42 and locally 43 degrees Celsius.

c. In eastern Sterea and eastern Peloponnese 40 to 42 degrees Celsius.

d. In the Ionian, the islands of the Eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese and southern Crete, 38 to 40 degrees Celsius.

e. In the rest of the island country, 34 to 37 degrees Celsius.

f. In Attica their 39 to 40 degrees Celsius.

5. On Wednesday (17-7-2024) and Thursday (18-7-2024) the peak temperatures are expected to reach:

a. In the interior of the western, central and northern mainland of 42 to 43 degrees Celsius.

b. In the Ionian, the islands of the Eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese and southern Crete are 39 to 41 degrees Celsius.

c. In the rest of the island country, 35 to 38 degrees Celsius.

At the same time, it is pointed out that conditions of high thermal stress are predicted due to the upcoming temperatures, in most continental regions of the country. The General Secretariat of Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr) of Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection, has informed the competent state agencies involved in the service, as well as the regions and municipalities of the country, so that they are on increased civil protection readiness, in order to immediately deal with the effects of the prevalence of high temperatures.

At the same time, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection recommends that citizens be especially careful, taking measures to protect themselves from risks arising from the prevalence of high temperatures.

In areas where high temperatures are expected to prevail, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr) draws attention to people belonging to vulnerable groups to be especially careful in the coming days, in order to avoid health problems, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which may be caused by the high temperatures that will prevail.

In particular, according to the guidelines for self-protection against high temperatures, citizens are advised to:

• Stay in cool and shady places away from overcrowding, use air conditioners or fans and avoid heavy physical work in places with high temperature, apnea and high humidity.

• Avoid sunbathing, as well as walking or running under the sun and wear a hat and sunglasses and light-colored clothing made of fabric that allows the skin to ventilate and facilitates the evaporation of sweat, avoiding synthetic fabrics.

• Consume light meals with fruits and vegetables, limiting fats and the amount of food.

• Drink plenty of water and fruit juices, avoiding alcoholic beverages.

Special care is recommended for babies and young children, as well as the elderly and those with chronic diseases to protect them from high temperatures
