Significant damage to bridges, roads and houses
The approximately 50-minute summer storm that hit the Municipality of Alexandroupoli this afternoon, confirming the meteorological forecasts for weather changes with the main characteristics being rains and the occurrence of storms in many regions of Greece.
At approximately 4:00 p.m., the deputy mayor for Social Solidarity, Sports and Civil Protection, Ilias Dasteridis, with his announcement on social media, informed the citizens “to avoid any movement and approach to the mountain mass as well as to avoid Irish crossings”, due to the occurrence of extreme weather phenomena. At the same time, with its announcement, the community of Makris of the Municipality of Alexandroupoli calls on citizens to avoid traveling on the Makris-Dikellon Provincial Road as well as on the Old National Road, due to the presence of transported materials on the road surface, as a result of the heavy rainfall.
Watch the video from Thrakinea:
“Damage and damage to bridges, roads and houses were detected. The volume of water coming down from the mountains was such that it even threatened the central stream (Vanikiotis stream) that runs through the city, and that’s why we stopped traffic for two hours so that there would be no problem with the passage of vehicles”, he states in Athenian Macedonian News Agency Mr. Dasteridis. He states that the biggest problem occurred on the road network Makris-Dikellon and Alexandroupoli-Kirki with the transported materials invading and blocking the road. The central water supply pipe of the settlement of Dikelli also suffered significant damage due to displacement of the pipe without, however, interrupting the water supply, while bridges need support and restoration work. The large amount of water that fell on the mountain mass and not within the urban fabric resulted in the overflowing of the streams and its entry into the yards and residences of settlements, causing significant damage. “I immediately informed the Civil Protection, the police about the blocking of the Irish crossings and we avoided the worst because there was a very good coordination”, concludes the deputy mayor of Civil Protection.
It is noteworthy that just yesterday by decision of the General Secretary of Civil Protection, Vassilis Papageorgiou, the Municipality of Alexandroupolis was declared in a state of emergency of Civil Protection “to manage the consequences that may arise from the occurrence of water shortage phenomena… This declaration will be valid from the date issue of the present for one month, i.e. until August 22, 2024…”, says the said decision.
