It was set for October 17th at the Mixed Jury Court of Giannitsathe trial of the doctor accused of the death of 14-year-old Georgia from Epanomi, Thessaloniki, after gastric bypass surgery, in June 2021. The Criminal Court of Thessaloniki, by will, referred him to trial for the felony act of fatal exposure , imposing – in addition – on him the restrictive condition not to participate in surgical procedures until the trial of the case.

In order to impose this term, the judges took into account the same accused surgeon’s two previous convictions (one of which was overturned) for similar incidents following similar surgeries. “The restrictive condition is considered suitable for the […] preventing the risk of committing new crimes, as his participation in the surgical procedure was the key condition for the performance of the acts attributed to him on his part”, it is stated, among other things, in the referral will.

In addition to the fatal exposure charge, the doctor was also charged with misdemeanor forgery and misdemeanor forgery. The first, according to the indictment, is connected to the minor’s signature which he allegedly forged before the surgery, while the second with the visual material (video) from the operation, when this was requested by the minor’s parents in view of their appeal to the Criminal Court Justice.

The accused doctor was released after pleading guilty last summer, on the condition of paying a 10,000 euro bond, denying the acts attributed to him, while allegedly claiming that he acted in accordance with the rules of medical science, citing his experience in such operations.

It should be noted that he was sentenced in May 2022 by the Three-member Criminal Court of Thessaloniki to 4 years in prison (at 5 euros/day) for the death of a 24-year-old man from Keramoti Kavala, following a similar operation, while for a similar case – which led to the death of a 42-year-old woman – he was previously sentenced to 3 years in prison, suspended, a sentence which has already become irrevocable.
