All the next few days are expected to be very dangerous for the occurrence of fires which can very easily and quickly take on uncontrolled dimensions due to the extreme weather conditions that will prevail.

According to information from the Civil Protection, the cocktail of strong north-easterly winds, drought and high temperatures will bring to orange, that is, a step before the red alert, areas that were not affected by recent rains, resulting in high levels of drought . For this reason, Fire department and all Civil Protection forcess will be on full alert in order to immediately deal with any fire incidents.

In particular, a very high risk of fire is predicted tomorrow in Attica, Kythira, Boeotia, Evia, Argolis, areas of Fthiotida, Corinthia and Laconiawhile the risk will be high in a large part of island Greece and in several areas of the mainland.

Specifically, according to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr), a very high risk of fire (risk category 4) is predicted for the following areas tomorrow:

  • Region of Attica (including the island of Kythira)
  • Region of Central Greece (PE Boeotia, PE Evia, PE Fthiotida)
  • Peloponnese Region (Corinthia Region, Argolis Region, Laconia Region)

The general secretariat of Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr) of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection has informed the competent government agencies involved in the official service, as well as the Regions and Municipalities of the above areas, so that they are on increased civil protection readiness in order to face any fire incidents immediately.

At the same time, the GPP recommends that citizens be especially careful and avoid activities in the open air that can cause a fire by negligence, such as burning dry grass and branches or cleaning residues, the use of machines that cause sparks such as circular saws, welding devices, the use outdoor grills, smoking bees, throwing lit cigarettes, etc. Also, it is recalled that during the fire protection season burning of fields is prohibited.

In the event of a fire, citizens are requested to immediately notify the Fire Service at the number 199.
