At this moment in our country, the largest veterinary operation that has ever been carried out is being carried out, the general secretary of the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food, Giorgos Stratakos, told SKAI 100.3, regarding the cases plague of goats and sheep that have been identified in Thessaly and Corinthia.

He noted that more than 140 scientists, mostly veterinarians, are currently working in the field.

He stated that in the event of a case being identified, European protocols are followed, while he noted that great importance is attached to tracing.

He explained that the cases in Corinthia and Falani of Larissa were detected following the steps of the epidemiological investigation.

Mr. Stratakos noted that the breeders will be compensated as soon as the procedures are completed and appealed to the breeders if they see any symptoms to contact the competent authorities.

Referring to Thessaly, he said that it is too early for estimates, but it seems that there is a limitation.

The problem that arose with the case of plague in goats and sheep in mountainous Corinthia did not come from the region, Anastasios Giolis, Corinthian deputy governor, told SKAI 100.3.

As he noted, some of our fellow citizens did not go by the law and asked the government to take drastic measures for the irresponsibility of – as he said – some.

He reiterated that this is a zoonosis that is not transmitted in any way to humans, nor to other animal species.

The president of the Federation of Cattle Breeders of Thessaly, Dimitris Baloukasstated that the trace that started in Thessaly led to the Corinthian farm.

He explained that the herders are calm and take measures to protect their herds.

He emphasized, however, that the consequences for a breeder who finds a case in his herd are very large, as they include the killing of all the animals in the breeding unit.

As he mentioned, the compensations must be very generous in order for him to be able to acquire animals again and engage in animal husbandry.
