In addition to the very serious problem facing the island with the huge amounts of garbage in every part of the city of Corfu and beyond, the residents in many areas of the island of Faiaki live every day and for many hours without running water. SKAI publishes a video that captures the serious problem that remains unresolved to this day.

In fact, tourists complain to SKAI that on a number of the island’s famous beaches, the showers have been closed, as there is no drop of water. In a statement issued by the island’s tourism agents, they state: “Continuous water outages and long-hour power outages are unacceptable for a modern tourist destination. These holidays not only cause disruption to residents and businesses, but also irreparably damage the touristic image of the island.”

In a recent municipal council, the Mayor of Central Corfu responded to the entrepreneurs who ask for the problem to be solved immediately, saying that entrepreneurship also has obligations: “Unfortunately, permits for tourist accommodation and swimming pools do not go through the municipality. It is a case that is handled at another level by other services. However, the point is correct: when a hotel unit is added and it needs 500 cubic meters of water per day, it needs to know where it will get it from,” said St. Sold.

South Corfu is in a state of emergency

The mayor of southern Corfu Kostas Lessis requests that the municipal units of Lefkimmai and Korissia be declared in a state of emergency in order to deal with the water shortage, who also requests the immediate convergence of the Board of Directors of DIAEFDAK to discuss and make a decision to immediately deal with the problems that afflict the inhabitants of the southern regions. And while the social tension has already grown due to the prolonged water shortage, today DIAEFDAK issued a statement, after many days, particularly brief and vague regarding the solution to the problem.

The announcement states:

“We inform you that the water deficit observed during this period in the areas of Lefkimmi and Korissia is due to a serious drop in the level of the Neohoraki boreholes.

At this stage, exploratory drilling is being done to find water at a lower level and efforts are being made to reduce leaks.

Based on the progress of the research work, you will be informed with new announcements in the coming days.”
