The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, who has moved to the fire in Evia, spoke of a “night of battle”.

It’s a fight night for us. The situation is not the one we faced at noon, the Beauforts are not like that, nor the meltemias. But, unfortunately, Evia is the natural defense, if you will, in front of Attica and always gives us such weather that creates problems for us. We faced such a situation at noon in Psachna Evia. They’re all here, the fire chief, the deputy chief, all the leadership, all the ground forces“, said Mr. Kikilias and added that all forces operating will work to create fire zones during the night.

The work we do together with all the agencies is the zones. The work that can be done overnight. Safety first, so that we can find a better situation at first light that the aerials will attempt. No one will leave here all night until we do our job“, underlined Mr. Kikilias.

As he said, “the fire and the zone that has already burned or passed, will give rise to flare-ups and will have challenges tomorrow as well” while he called on the citizens “to be disciplined and listen to the instructions of the Greek Police who carry out the evacuations as well as the fire brigade».

Regarding tomorrow, Mr. Kikilias said that more than 20 aerial vehicles will operate at the first light of day. This means, he explained, that they will fly in two circles.

Always have aerial overhead. Don’t leave the fire without air“, he emphasized.

Work all night and fight, and work in the morning“, he underlined.

You see we are all here together this year. District, municipalities, fire department, volunteers, police, forest department and armed forces. I would like there to be safety first. Then of course we care about people’s property, houses and we have protected them as you see today throughout the day. But we also have a goal, a job, to get this situation together and be able to complete, bringing this fire into remission.“, he noted and added that within a few hours today more than 40 fires broke out.

From Ilia, in central Macedonia, Kilkis again, Oreokastro, Central Evia. You understand that the circumstances are such that no mistake is forgiven. It hasn’t rained, you saw that. It has not snowed, there is no humidity. We are facing the most difficult firefighting season in the last 20 years and yet you see it is here every day and everyone is fighting and there is a price. You see firefighters injured, firefighters with burns, people on duty giving their all. To them, our volunteers and all the partners over here, I thank them very much from the bottom of my heart“, concluded Mr. Kikilias.
