Deaths in the country decreased by 2,813 or 4.3%, including deaths due to Covid-19 pandemic, in the first 26 weeks of this year (1/1/2024- 30/6/2024) and amounted to 62,351 (31,448 men and 30,903 women), while during the corresponding period of 2023 (2/1/2023- 2/7/2023) they had risen to 65,164 (32,907 men and 32,257 women).
Also according to ELSTAT, a decrease of 4,166 deaths (6.3%) compared to the average of total deaths of 26 weeks for the years of the period 2018-2023 (66,517 deaths). The corresponding percentages of change, per year, for the period 2018-2023 amount to -11.9% in 2023 compared to 2022 (73,941 deaths), to 6.6% in 2022 compared to 2021 (69,377 deaths), to 7.6% in 2021 compared to 2020 (64,506 deaths), to -1.5% in 2020 compared to 2019 (65,495 deaths) and to 8% in 2019 compared to 2018 (60,616 deaths).
According to the above data, in the period of the first 26 weeks of 2024 there is a decrease in deaths for 20 weeks and an increase in deaths for 6 weeks, compared to the corresponding period of 2023. The most significant decreases are recorded on the 7th (12/2/ 2024- 18/2/2024), in the 9th (26/2/2024- 3/3/2024) and in the 8th week (19/2/2024- 25/2/2024) by 18.2%, 13.6 % and 12.9% respectively. The most significant increases are recorded on the 24th (10/6/2024- 16/6/2024), the 25th (17/6/2024- 23/6/2024) and the 23rd week (3/6/2024- 9/6 /2024) by 16.1%, 10.6% and 8.9% respectively.
By age group, a decrease in deaths is observed in most age groups, with the main decreases, in absolute terms, recorded for the age groups 80 to 84 years (984 deaths), 85 to 89 years (824 deaths) and over 90 years (473 deaths), while the main increase is observed in the 65 to 69 age group (53 deaths).
According to the region of permanent residence of the deceased, a decrease in deaths is observed in 12 of the 13 regions of the country. The most significant reductions, in absolute terms, are shown in the regions of Attica, Central Macedonia and Thessaly by 883, 462 and 321 deaths respectively, while an increase is observed in the North Aegean region by 39 deaths.
