The 34-year-old leader of the camp and the 19-year-old group leader were arrested for the tragic incident, where they are accused of manslaughter
All of Greece watched with bated breath at noon on Tuesday the tragic news of the death of an 8-year-old girl in a camp in Halkidiki.
Her family and her local community Kirokrinis, Halkidikihave fallen into mourning. Answers as to why the child drowned in the camp pool have not yet been given.
Yesterday morning, the results of the autopsy were released, confirming that the girl’s death was due to drowning.
So far the camp’s swimming pools have been sealed as they did not meet the appropriate standards. Their licenses were revoked.
The 34-year-old leader of the camp and the 19-year-old group leader were arrested for the tragic incident, where they are accused of manslaughter.
Both were released pending trial while the legal representative of the business in the context of the autobus is also being sought, according to the report of Thesstoday.gr.
Despite the great disturbance, not a single person has been found to explain to the girl’s parents why their child drowned.
“Everything is open about what has happened, they didn’t tell us anything from the camp,” the 8-year-old’s father burst out on newsit.gr, revealing that some from the camp said there was supervision while others said the opposite.
“We all wonder how it is possible that no one saw that an eight-year-old girl was gone,” the father said at last.
“I didn’t see anyone in the pool and I locked it”
A “key” witness for the case, the lifeguard of the camp, gave a statement to the police stressing that before locking the pool she looked inside and saw no one.
“As soon as the kids finished swimming — about 1:15 p.m. according to the schedule — I looked into the pool. I didn’t see anyone in it and then I locked the double entry door,” she was quoted as saying in her deposition, as reported by the Star.
The announcement of the camp
After the tragedy the Halkidiki camp issued a statement describing what happened at noon that day.
“Today, Tuesday, August 13, after lunch had been finished and the campers were in their rooms for their lunch break, it was found that one camper was missing. The camp headquarters was immediately notified and a team of officials began searching for her on the camp grounds.
The camper was found unconscious in the pool. The camper was given first aid with the method of cardiorespiratory resuscitation (CPR) and with the use of a defibrillator by the medical staff of the camp and the EMS which was immediately called to the site.
An ambulance transported the camper to the Kassandra Health Center and then to the Thessaloniki ACHEPA Hospital where she was pronounced dead. We would like to express our deep sorrow for the loss of our camper and will assist the authorities in any way possible to investigate the circumstances of the accident.”
