Heavy fines – which will reach up to 30,000 euros – will be imposed from September on the owners of uninsured vehicles and also on those who have not passed their vehicles through a KTEO or have not paid traffic taxes.

The inspection “safari” will take place once every six months and the first one is estimated to take place within September.

How will they be located?

The electronic mechanism for checking and cross-checking data of the Independent Public Revenue Authority will operate through a special platform – which the General Secretariat of Information Systems and Digital Governance has in the works in collaboration with the AADE.

Fines for uninsured vehicles

Depending on the illegality, fines will start at 250 euros.

Specifically, the law provides:

• 250 euros for the bikes,
• 500 euros for passenger cars and other vehicles of any nature and
• a fine of 1,000 euros for public use buses and trucks

For the traffic fees a fine equal to the amount of the fees is imposed if a debt of at least 1 year is established.

If the vehicle is found not to have undergone a periodic Central Technical Vehicle Inspection (KTEO), a fine is imposed 400€.

According to the new law, within 3 months of the notification of the act imposing a fine, a re-check is carried out. If the owner is found not to have complied, then their vehicle license and plates are taken away. License and plates are returned only if the owner of the vehicle provides according to the violation:

-The relevant insurance contract

-The current technical inspection report

– The certificate of non-payment of traffic fees.

In case relapse (by the same owner, for the same vehicle, within three years of the imposition of the fine) a fine is imposed double of those provided for each case and at the same time license plates and license plates are removed.

After the fine has been imposed and notified, the owner or occupier of the vehicle has the right to appeal. The appeal is submitted electronically in a special electronic application on the digital portal of the Public Administration within 10 days. The decision on the appeal is made within 30 days.

Controls will also be conducted for any traffic of vehicles that have been declared to immobility. In case of violation, a fine is imposed €10,000 together with traffic taxes and the fine for non-payment thereof. In case relapsethe fine is tripled on €30,000 and the driver’s license is revoked for 3 years.

The new law puts an end to the extensions given every year to the payment of traffic fees, which will from now on be collected STRICTLY between November 1st and December 31st. If they are paid in January, a fine of 25% of their value is imposed. If they are paid in February, the fine is 50%. For a longer delay, the fine is equal to the road tax.
