The story of little Iona has moved the whole country
The shocking rescue of an infant immigrant, just 50 days old, a few days ago in Tilos, was made known by the mayor of the island, Maria Kamma.
The 50-day-old baby was trapped for three days in a rugged area and his parents made his milk with sea water.
The infant was given the name “Ionas”, likening the little refugee boy to the monk who washed up in Tilos and built the monastery of Agios Panteleimon.
In her post, the mayor of Tilos also mentions:
“Pregnant woman trapped on the mountain, infants and children thrown to steep parts of the island, women injured, men badly beaten by the Turkish traffickers, make up the scene of despair experienced by the society of my island in the last months… and the external help? minimum…
The few porters who serve on the island have exceeded the limits of their endurance for a long time and yet they do not back down, they do not accept the loss of any human life!
Two or three policemen who have also thrown themselves into the “game” with time to catch people alive.
Commander and army help to a very large extent day and night…”
