The E-Learning of the University of Athens, in its 23 years of operation, has developed more than 600 training programs
Technological challenges are reshaping the world of work by bringing to the surface new skills, innovative products and services. The new landscape emerging is what major consulting firms are calling the “skills revolution”: new more advanced skills which include both social and emotional skills, as well as high-level cognitive skills as well as technological skills.
According to Om. Professor of Economics and Scientific Manager of E-Learning of EKPA Panagiotis Petrakis “rethinking and redesigning the relationship between learning and profit for workers and the Investing in the changes needed to equip tomorrow’s citizens with the skills of the future is imperative for education organizations”. In this context, the EKPA E-Learning offers a number of distance training programs related to skills such as analytical and critical thinking, result orientation, communication skills in the work environment, creativity in the professional area, problem solving skills, digital and green skills , self-leadership skill, the skill of curiosity, etc
“At this juncture and Given the demographic changes in Western societies, the role of lifelong learning is more critical than ever, because it is called upon and is able to fill skill gaps, thus giving opportunities for equality and inclusion to many groups of workers. Individuals may not have control over their social and economic background or the quality of their education, but they do have some control over their career development in terms of the fields of employment they choose and the career decisions they make during their careers.” , says Mr. Panagiotis Petrakis.
“Indeed, in the context of highlighting the importance of horizontal skills in the modern working environment, we offer free access to educational material titled “Skill Development Necessary Supply for Professional Life”. The main purpose of the training material is to provide everyone interested with the necessary information about skills and to make it clear that the acquisition and upgrading of skills is a passport to the current and future labor market.
The skills that will be in demand are of course technological and digital skills at a high level but also at a basic level. By 2030 they will have the largest increase of 55% representing 17% of working hours compared to 11% in 2016 (Mc Kinsey Global Institute 2023) as they will also be required in jobs that are not considered purely technological, such as nursing or education where digital technologies will be increasingly used. Social and emotional skills such as leadership and management skills will be increasingly important in the digital world, with their use increasing from 18% today to 22% in 2030.
Cognitive skills will also be in demand, with demand shifting from basic cognitive skills to higher-level skills such as creativity, complex information processing and critical thinking. The analysis suggests that the demand for physical and manual skills will decrease from 31% of working hours to 25%, but will still remain a larger category of the workforce. Based on analysis of workforce skills in the US and Western Europe, the demand for different skills will vary by sector.
The E-Learning of the University of Athens, in its 23 years of operation, has developed more than 600 training programs with more than 150 Professors of the Foundation participating in their development and implementation, while more than 180,000 people have been trained.
