The first double heart-lung transplant that took place on Saturday in Greece was successful.

The gift of life was given to a 52-year-old mother of a small child by a 49-year-old woman and the recipient is hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit under close monitoring.

The 52-year-old woman received a heart and lungs as part of a long-hour operation at Onassio.

According to ERT, she suffered from congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension and for a long time was transferred as an emergency case to the hospitals of Thessalia, Attikon and Onassio for the treatment of emergencies caused by her health problem.

A very big effort was made, which is primarily due to the family of the 49-year-old donor as her members in their mourning decided to donate her organs.

The National Transplant Organization had been informed of the 52-year-old woman’s case and that she needed a double transplant, and all together the hospitals worked together in a very coordinated operation to make this medical feat possible.

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis thanked the doctors, pointing out that this is the first heart-lung transplant in our country.

It was the 40th lung transplant operation in our country after the summer of 2020, when the lung transplant program that had been suspended for a long time was restarted.
