The great journalist and historical publisher of the newspaper “To Pontiki”, Costas Papaioannou, died at the age of 84.

He was the creator of the weekly satirical newspaper in 1979 and was the publisher and director for 26 years, until 2005.

He was born in 1938 in Nea Smyrni. His father Nikos came from a family settled for many centuries in Athens (“Athenian gangster”) while his mother Angeliki came from Istanbul. He began his journalistic career in 1956, at the age of 18, in the newspaper “Acropolis”, where he initially covered court reporting, and then did freelance reporting. He remained there until the change of government in 1974, when he switched to “Nea”, now in charge of political reporting. At the same time (1975-78), he was the editor-in-chief of “Anti” magazine.

In 1979, while working as a political editor at “Nea” (he stayed until 1986), he also started publishing “Pontikiou”, a weekly “political – revealing – satirical newspaper” (during its self-presentation), which very It quickly made a sensation with its ingenious headlines (usually some collage cartoons) but also the excellent “inside information” it had, especially after the rise to power of Andreas Papandreou in 1981.

In June 2005 Papaioannou retired. He was married and had a daughter and two grandchildren. After his retirement, he lived in Aegina.
