Scientists believe that this unprecedented incident happened due to the “dominance” of one of the two reptiles on the farm, where there was an abundance of food
Scientists from Bangladesh have recorded for the first time an unprecedented battle between two of the world’s largest snake species.
A 3.5m long Burmese python swallowed alive a reticulated python – which lives in the jungles of Malaysia and Myanmar. The weight of this python can reach 120 kg.
The unprecedented incident was recorded by researchers at the Akiz Wildlife Farm in Chittagong.
The scientists recorded the Burmese python – which can reach a maximum of 137kg – coiling tightly around the other snake and swallowing it by the tail.
In fact, the predatory python took about two hours to completely devour its prey, according to a report recently published in the journal Reptiles and Amphibians.
Scientists believe that this unprecedented incident happened because of the “dominance” of one of the two reptiles on the farm, where there was an abundance of food.
“It was a really unusual situation to find two pythons in the same area,” study co-author Ashikur Rahman Shome, a wildlife ecologist at the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh, told Live Science.
Burmese pythons can reach 5.8 meters while reticulated pythons can reach up to 7.6 meters. In this case, the reticulated python was larger than the Burmese, but the exact length was not obtained, he said Shome.
