Per person plastic consumption is around 28 kg – 7% increase in use from 2021 – China is the champion in plastic waste
The amount of plastic waste on Earth has reached staggering proportions, according to new research.
In particular, scientists are sounding the alarm that the world is on track to generate 220 million tonnes of plastic waste this year, as reported by MailOnline.
To give you an idea of what this means, the weight is equivalent to 650 Empire State Buildings.
It appears, therefore, that plastic waste will not be properly managed during the 117 days remaining in 2024, according to Earth Action.
Of the 220 million approximately 70 thousand tons will end up in nature due to the imbalance that exists between the number of plastics consumed and the ability to manage these plastics at the end of their life, as the scientists report,
Still, scientists estimate that the consumption is approximately 28 kg of plastic per person. There has been a 7% increase in plastic use per person since 2021.
Meanwhile, 12 countries are responsible for 60 percent of the world’s mismanaged plastic waste – the top five are China, the Russian Federation, India, Brazil and Mexico.
