The fishing sanctuaries are a €4.8 million budget project, which was implemented within the framework of the Fisheries and Seas Operational Program
The fishing shelters of Glyfa and Achladi Fthiotidas were inaugurated this morning by the Minister of Rural Development and Food, Kostas Tsiaras.
It is a project with a budget of €4.8 million, which was implemented within the framework of the Operational Program for Fisheries and the Sea (OPF) 2014-2020 and the Program for Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Sea (PALYTH) 2021-2027.
The twin port infrastructures in Glyfa and Achladi change the prospects in the fishing sector in the region of Fthiotida, as, as Kostas Tsiaras pointed out, in addition to additional berthing positions, they expand the possibilities to serve more and larger vessels compared to the current situation .
In fact, due to their proximity to the national road, they will be able to approach large boats (gri-gri) for refueling and unloading their catch, which provide even greater fishing opportunities. At the same time, they give new service possibilities to the fish farming units of the wider region.
It is noted that from the 2014-2020 EPAlTh, a total of 34 projects in fishing sanctuaries were joined and implemented or continue to be implemented.
The budget exceeded €100,000,000 of Public Expenditure, exceeding the measure’s budget by approximately 250%. Of these, projects have already been completed in 16 fishing sanctuaries, with an integration budget of €42 million.
As Mr. Tsiaras pointed out, the geomorphological peculiarities of Greece require a large number of fishing shelters both for the unloading of catches and for the safety of the fishing vessels on the one hand, but also to ensure the hygiene and quality of the catches and the safety and the working conditions of fishermen.
The inauguration was attended by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Christos Staikouras, the Regional Governor of Central Greece Fanis Spanos, the MPs Yiannis Economou and George Kotronias, the Mayor of Stylida Yiannis Apostolou . The ceremony was officiated by the Metropolitan of Fthiotida, Mr. Simeon.
“The effort to modernize structures and expand production is important”
A little later, Kostas Tsiaras visited a table olive processing plant in Katerini, pointing out the need to strengthen the competitiveness of Greek products, which give enormous added value to the primary sector.
The owners of the unit, Brothers Giorgos and Prokopis Konstantopoulos, gave the minister a tour of the new units of the factory. In total the unit covers 120 acres. The facilities are spread over 18,000 square meters, in which approximately 25,000 tons of oils are processed and standardized per year, 98% of which are exported.
The expansion of the unit has been financed by the Recovery and Resilience Fund and the PAA 2014-2020.
In his statements, the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, Kostas Tsiaras, referred to the need to modernize the primary sector and strengthen the competitiveness of Greek products.
Mr. Tsiara stated: “”As part of my visits around Greece, I had the pleasure today to be in the Konstantopoulos brothers’ industry Olymp SA and to be guided through a really huge investment, for a product, which creates huge added value in the Greek primary sector. As a country, we have a long tradition in the olive industry, which has enabled this industry to play a dominant role in the export sector as well. However, it is mainly the modernization effort and the effort to further develop the infrastructure and expand the production process that – obviously – can provide even greater value for the future.
It is the wish of all of us to see such units develop, expand, and even multiply. Because this is what will ultimately create surplus value, will give added value to Greek products and will give new life to our local societies, but also to the regional economy”.
