A 49-year-old taxi driver who issued tax receipts with a fake VAT number was arrested by police officers of the Traffic Accident Control and Prevention Team (OEPTA) of the Attica Traffic Directorate, during checks.

In particular, according to ELAS, the 49-year-old driver of the taxi, which was given to him by his owner, is accused of violating the taximeter’s seal and tampering with its software, resulting in him issuing a total of more than 5,000 tax receipts, using a virtual Tax Registration Number (TIN).

As it was established during the audit, the 49-year-old hid from the competent authorities the sum of 79,286 euros for which the corresponding VAT has not been paid.

In addition, the 49-year-old had collected excessive fare in at least 10 cases, setting the taximeter to a double charge instead of a single charge during the hours not provided for by law.

The 49-year-old driver was arrested and taken to the competent prosecutor for violation of the laws on the regulation of the purchase of products and the provision of services, on tampering with the measuring instruments of the taximeter and cash register and for collecting a fee greater than that allowed by the written provisions, while a copy of his tax record taximeter will be sent to the competent services for further financial control.

As pointed out in the relevant announcement of the Police, “similar checks aimed at strengthening the sense of security among the traveling citizens are carried out continuously”.
