Following the decisions taken during the recent meeting in Athens, between the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakou Mitsotakis and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, signed last night (Friday 20 September) Framework of Understanding between the two countries, for the promotion of the Cyprus-Crete Electricity Interconnection, between the Minister of Environment and Energy of Greece Theodore Skylakakis and the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry of the Republic of Cyprus, George Papanastasiouaccording to a joint announcement by the energy ministries of the two countries.

On the basis of this Framework and following the relevant decisions of Regulatory Authorities of the two countries provided for in it, the project is expected to restart in the next few days.

As stated in the Framework, the Cyprus-Crete Electrical Interconnection will contribute to the removal of Cyprus’ energy isolation, by interconnecting the national electricity transmission system of Cyprus with the corresponding trans-European systems.

It is a project of strategic importance for the Cyprusthe Greecebut also for the entire EU, as this project will not only connect Cyprus to the European electricity system, facilitating its energy transition, but will also promote Greece’s goal of becoming a clean energy transport corridor.
