Giannis Mortzos was an actor and director. He was born on October 11, 1940 in Samos.

He studied theater at the Drama School “Art Theater – Karolos Koon” with teacher Karolos Koon.

He remained close to him, as a key executive of the theater, until 1981 and performed under their guidance great theatrical roles from the entire spectrum of theatrical writing: ancient drama, classical theater, modern theater, theater of the absurd, but mainly modern Greek theater, for the which he had a particular weakness for and preferred in his repertoire choices.

With the Art Theatre, he took part, as a main protagonist, in the major theater festivals of Europe in the 60s, 70s and 80s and met famous artists, from whom he gained important knowledge. He collaborated with most Greek actors, directors, musicians, stage designers and translators. In recent years, he had created the “Four Seasons” Theater, with which he presented important performances throughout Greece.

He was a founding member of PASOK (1974) and had been a trade unionist in the field of entertainment (president of POTHA), as well as a municipal councilor of Athens for 8 years (1986-1994).

He taught theater in drama schools for thirty-five years and was a member of the Society of Greek Theater Directors.

Examples of his work in the theater are the performances Guillotine (2018), The Trial of Socrates (2018), I, Martha Freud (2016), Eleftherios Venizelos (2016).

On television, he participated in the series “What soul will you deliver baby”, “The color of the moon”, “Hail to my plane tree”, etc.

Informed of the loss of Yannis Mortzou, the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni made the following statement:

“Yiannis Mortzos served the theater with unwavering devotion and unique honesty. He was a student of Karolos Koon and a key member of the Art Theater for twenty years. In his long career he has successfully performed a wide range of roles, from the classical and contemporary repertoire. He succeeded in creating his own theatrical scheme, the “Four Seasons”, and left a distinct mark on everyone in the roles he played, rightly winning the recognition of the theater world, but also of the general public, who loved him even through selective appearances of on television. Giannis Mortzos was an active citizen, with long-term involvement in politics and trade unionism, consistently serving his political beliefs and the faction to which he belonged. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and fellow artists.”
