The Minister, Sofia Zaharaki, said: “Institutions and hospital wards are not places for children to live and raise. They are emergency solutions and that is how we deal with them as a government. From the first moment, the Prime Minister made the “battle” for deinstitutionalization an absolute priority. To create the conditions and the framework in order to safely and with guarantees take the children out of the institutions. Offering families and homes, that will guide them with the utmost care and concern in their adult life. By significantly increasing foster care benefits we recognize and show the necessary respect for the mission undertaken by hundreds of foster parents. We are happy to see the joint efforts paying off. We will continue by all means to give hope and perspective to every single child who is currently in an institution to believe that he will soon be where he deserves to be.”

The increase in the foster care allowance causes an annual expenditure of 1,622,100 euros, which is covered by the regular budget of the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family.

The total cost of the underwriting allowances is estimated at 5,000,000 euros per year and is covered by the regular budget of Y.KOI.S.O..
